Our client is an established South African software business. It builds and maintains systems for the bulk fuel, transport and logistics industry, plus an application that manages operational and financial data for manufacturing plants. They're looking for a hands-on senior C#/.NET developer to take ownership of modernising a mature legacy business system.
This is a development role first. You'll design and build the new C# solution yourself, working alongside a small, stable team (two directors and two developers) who know the legacy application and the customers well. Over time there's scope to set technical direction and mentor a junior developer, but the job is about writing and designing good software, not managing people.
Key Responsibilities
Design and build C# / .NET applications that progressively take over existing VB6 functionality.
Own the design and implementation of the new solution, with clean separation between frontend, business logic and data access layers.
Lay a sound foundation for the next phase: a separate backend / API with a modern frontend.
Work with SQL / MariaDB databases, business rules and ERP-style operational and financial workflows.
Keep the codebase maintainable for a small team through good testing, documentation and development standards.
Work closely with the current senior developer, who knows the customers and the VB6 code, to understand how the system really works before rebuilding it.
Requirements
At least 5 years of professional software development, still strongly hands-on with code.
Strong C#, .NET and SQL, with solid backend and database experience.
Evidence of personally designing business systems or significant application components, including APIs and layered application architecture.
Experience with business systems or ERP, and comfort working with operational processes, not just screens.
Good testing and documentation discipline.
Able to work remotely and independently without day-to-day technical supervision, communicate clearly and take ownership.
A career history that shows you stay and build things over the long term.
Honesty, integrity and a focus on adding value to customers' businesses.
Experience migrating or modernising legacy systems, especially VB6 or MariaDB, would be highly advantageous.
Experience in fuel, logistics, transport or manufacturing would be advantageous.
HTML, CSS, PHP or other web or backend experience would be advantageous.
